WHERE AND WHEN
The Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day (WPPD) celebrates its eleventh edition. The international event that promotes the fantasy, art, fun and experience of lens-less photography, will occur on April 24, 2010 and expects to break last year’s record that saw the participation of over 3400 photographers from all over the world. Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day is always the last Sunday in April. In 2011. Since this is also Easter Sunday, for 2011 only, we will accept pinhole photographs taken between April 23 and May 1.

HOW
Everyone in the world is invited to take a picture with a pinhole camera during between April 23 and May 1 and upload it to http://www.pinholeday.org. One photo by each artist will become part of the internet’s premier pinhole photography gallery.

WHAT IT IS
Pinhole photos are taken without a lens but simply through a small hole, about the size of the period at the end of a sentence. Photos can be made using regular cameras, including digital, fitted with a pinhole aperture. Refined results can be obtained using pinhole cameras purposely made for the lens-less photography. It is creative, funny and educational to use a self-made camera from ordinary items such as shoe boxes, peeled tomato cans or tea boxes. Any container that can be made light-tight can become a pinhole camera.

An increasing number of people are showing interest in the exciting practice of pinhole photography. In 2001, 291 pinhole photographers from 24 countries took part in the web exhibition. Last year they were 3449 from 70 countries.

IN THE WORLD
Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day will see many pinhole photography events organized in every corner of the earth, from workshops to groups of friends making photos and from elegant exhibitions to elementary school classroom participation. Special attention is devoted to young folks and schools.

WHO WE ARE
WPPD stems from the enthusiastic work by dozens of volunteers scattered worldwide. Their efforts are directed by the international coordinating team: Tom Miller – USA (Team Leader and Events), Paolo Aldi – Italy (Publicity), Nick Dvoracek – USA (Support), Wolfgang Thoma – Belgium (Translations), Gregg Kemp – USA (Webmaster), Chuck Flagg – USA (Education)

More information and the full program (constantly updated) can be found at http://www.pinholeday.org.

WHY
Why ‘Slow Photography’ with pinhole? Because this photography is about:

Release
The feeling to be the masters of the images we produce instead of a kind of servo-system of the camera.

Magic
Whatever the ‘camera obscura’ on hand, whatever the level of our technical ability, the result is magical.

World
The world seen through a little hole is a timeless world, silent, enchanted.

Time
The suspended and rarefied atmosphere that reigns on the lens-less images is the result of a very special relation with time. Forget the snapshot: it may take seconds or minutes before the image is fully exposed.

Pinhole is the photography of patience, of meditation. With traditional photography, and mainly with digital photography, one snaps and runs, so we see the places only afterwards, at home. The pinhole photographer carefully chooses his subjects; he cannot snap nonstop.

Ecology of the mind
Pinhole photographers wait for the little box to do its job and in the meantime they look around, they think.

No more anguish for a ‘badly turned out’ photo; an unexpected light intrusion, a diffraction, a blur are accidents that pinhole photographers consider, they accept them, more, they appreciate them as the chance contribution to the artistic creation. Praise to the controlled inaccuracy, philosophy of the respect for the world order! It is ecology of the image that becomes ecology of the mind.

An enigmatic name Omfman belongs to a photographer and constructor (One Man Foto) who has been creating camera obscura equipment for years. His works can be characterized as highly aesthetic, hand-made, durable and simple to use.

The photographer’s individual preferences affect the final shape of each model, which makes the newly produced device a unique tool of trade for its user. The wooden cameras are hardly ever break-down-prone and the constructor himself aims at making them as admirable as Erneman or Hermagis works once used to be.

Having impregnated the cameras, he gives them a vintage look. The mixture of carpentry, photography and a long-term experience has resulted in the creation of Omfman’s works which may be called as “objects having their inner soul”, the visible results of the constructor’s passion and emotions conveyed in each piece.

Making the dreams of creating the impossible come true, Omfman claims that “the term impossible does not exist, instead the difficulties happen”.

Omfmans webpage: www.omfman.com

Omfman also sells wooden film holders for 24×30 and other. Write to Omfman’s for more info.

We will be more than honoured to welcome you in our earliest establishment, where we are happy to share our long years of experience and knowledge with you and to advise you carefully in any Polaroid way.

AN IMPOSSIBLE END-OF-THE-YEAR REVIEW. 2010 is the year that will go down in the history of photography as the year when millions of Polaroid cameras were prevented from becoming obsolete and analog instant photography made a comeback.

In March 2010 Impossible announced the successful outcome of its endeavors: the invention a brand new instant film for Vintage Polaroid cameras. In the course of the year, 4 different instant film materials for Polaroid SX 70, 600 and Image cameras were released and constantly improved. Currently Impossible provides analog photographers with the second generation of the monochrome Silver Shade films and the first experimental generation of the colorful Color Shade films. These new films consist of 31 newly assembled components, produced in cooperation with partners like Ilford Photo or InovisCoat. In the course of 2010, more than 500.000 Impossible film packs were sold, carefully manufactured by a team of initially 10 and now 30 former Polaroid employees.

For 2011 Impossible plans to ramp up production of instant film to over 2 million packs, including the long awaited successor of the Polaroid 600 color film: The PX 680 Color Shade. In late 2011 Impossible also aims to restart production of the legendary 8×10 inch format.

Impossible’s ambitions do reach far beyond the production of instant films. To name a few of the many exciting highlights in 2010: the creation of a special film edition with HUGE magazine (Japan), the participation at Photokina 2010 (GER) with the first 20×24 camera shooting on Impossible film, an Impossible Exhibition during the Arles Photography Festival or a cooperation with the American rock band The Decemberists (USA).

Based on the huge success of the Impossible Project Space in New York City, which attracted thousands of visitors and customers throughout 2010, Impossible opened another Project Space in Tokyo on December 3. The Impossible Project Spaces serve as a vivid hub for analog instant photography. Beyond carrying all available analog films and cameras, the exhibitions of a wide range of artistic projects inspirit the Project Spaces.

Currently the Impossible Project Space Tokyo presents the “Exhibition :
Impossible”, featuring photographs taken on PX 600 Silver Shade UV+ film by Japan’s greatest, contemporary photographers like Araki Nobuyoshi or Daido Moriyama. Combined with the botanical sculptures by Japanese artist Azuma Makoto, the exhibition carries the visitor off to an impressive, monochrome world – until December 25.

An artistic Impossible review is opening on December 15 at the Impossible Project Space New York City – “Facing the Impossible” is a portrait series by international photographers on the new Impossible instant films, celebrating Impossible’s achievements that build the base for much more to come.
